So I'm reading in the newspaper about the law suits against Merck and their product, Vioxx.
First, the lawsuits these days are getting insanely out of hand. I read just yesterday that some men/lawyers are taking a professional baseball team under suit because the park celebrated Mother's Day by giving WOMEN 18 and older a gift at the entrance gates. Discriminating against men!! Ummmmmm, ya...okay. Right! I guess it's your choice. But to me that is carrying things a bit too far.
On the other hand, the tobacco companies! Now granted, the use of tobacco is lethal in most cases. Sure, some die from the over-use. But on the other hand, George Burns comes to mind. He admitted smoking since the age of 13! And he lived to be 100. My father was a chain smoker. He lived to be 83. My mother was not a smoker OR a drinker...and she was bombarded by second hand smoke. ALL her brothers were smokers, and 4 out of 5 of her children smoke. At her death, her lungs were clean and pink...healthy! I can't explain it. Nor do I wish to delve into her health, per sé. My older sister is the picture perfect lady...healthy! Non-smoker, but! She too lives with a chain smoker (her hubby is of great health also, but smokes heavily) --she was surrounded by smokers all her life, never in her life of 60+ years has she been hospitalized!). I can go back into both sides of my family from genealogy work and records...death certificates and what have you...lung cancer or any cancer wasn't the cause of death. One died of cirrhosis of the liver....but that was on my husband's side of our family's genealogy!! Smokers, drinkers - or non --our family's health maintains an even rhythm...dying of 'natural causes' and old age. And, for those reading, and against smoking, I'm not here for an argument. This is just comparing what I hear...you may know someone who has lung cancer, or has died of the result....I'm sorry. But, again, I'm not here to argue. I've seen polution in the air so bad that the sky is 'green' (in Denver, Colorado) --and people out jogging in it!!
What about over-eating? Do we now feel the need to put warning labels on packaged foods and menus? Or perhaps some shoes may be hazardous when in use when the soles are wet...do we need warnings on those too? (My point is, are people so dumb they need to be told before using?---If not, sue 'em?)
Still, my point is: the numerous law suits anymore. I'm wondering...the nation-wide law is to buckle up all passengers in your auto. Is it a law in the buses? Trains? Isn't there a lot of double standards in our laws these days? And, coming back to law suits here---since it is a law. and you're in an accident...say one of your passengers dies because of internal injuries from wearing the seat belt....can you sue the government from city, county, up to federal? Or perhaps the automobile manufacturers? Because of the seat belt law? Wait, I'm not done yet---speaking of autos....in reference to the cases being read about, the 3 major tobacco companies have never "referenced that fact that tobacco use is harmful"? hmmmmmm, makes me wonder why people begin to smoke, and cough their guts out to begin with, and it becomes habitual? Didn't the cough give you some idea that it wasn't a good thing? In the first place? Do you need to be told what's good and bad for you? Has the average human lost all common sense that they need lawyers to show them what way to live our lives? If you cross the street and get injured, can you then sue your own parents for not warning you that going into a street is dangerous?.....Do the car manufacturers label their vehicles as dangerous to your health? --Hey, there's stress in driving these days (have you ever been cut off by someone changing lanes on the interstate and impeding the flow of traffic?)....or maybe excessive speed isn't dangerous? There are speed limits---do people obey that?
States wanting to put another tax on cigarettes? This is another issue that needs to be looked into in my opinion...there are MORE drinkers than smokers! Why not tax the liquor sales? I'm sure the country in dire need of wealth as ours seems to be these days, could use this income!!!---But wait, not politically correct....um, the people behind the government office doors are drinkers!
Sorry, I just feel overwhelmed these days with reading about law suits....ridiculous. Discrimination against a ball team, by celebrating mother's day? What is wrong with this picture? Are we turning into an egotistic state where we are so infantile in standards and issues?

I totally agree with you. It is getting very ridiculous. I would say...That the first man that could prove he actually gave birth and celebrates being a mother could have a gift... lol I am sure he would not be complaining about it if he were a father and they were celebrating Father's day. Why are people so crazy?..lol They are sue happy for sure. I think they must be miserable people with nothing better to do then sure someone to prove "their" point or to feel powerful somehow? That is the only thing I can think of. It has just gone way to far ...really.
remember the lady that sued McDonald's because her coffee burned her lap?..Um, hello...COFFEE IS HOT LADY...DON'T PUT IT BETWEEN YOUR LEGS YA GOOF!..lol Was THAT lawsuit really
called for? I think not.
People are just selfishly money hungry these days. Many just want attention I say. I totally agree with Presentstorm as well. Things like this are just uncalled for! Thank you so much for stopping by! I always love hearing from you! Have An Absolutely Wonderful Day! :o)
That is why I don't read anything about law-suits. Call me ignorent, but if do, I just get up-set with people going against each other to make a profit from a lawsuit.
I agree... The world is going insane. Or atleast some people are... But these kind of bizarre lawsuits are characteristic of the USA & similar countires... In India the law cannot get around to deciding "real cases"... It takes reall long for genuine people to get justice. So that proves a deterrent to this kind of idiocy...
About the smoking bit though... I am totally against it. My father was a smoker too & he still suffers the after effects of that even now that he has quit. One of his lungs is quite damaged, and if you ask me. It's just God's grace that your family is okay healtwise even though there are so many smokers...
I couldn't have put it any better. Here in Australia, it is no different,it is getting totally out of hand.
I get so darn upset and mad at peoples need to "cash in" on their own stupidity. Their need to blame others rather than taking responsibilty and using basic common sense.
I could go on and on.. actually I did, but erased it.. LMAO..
Hey, I might sue Microsoft, and Telstra .. I mean I am totally addicted to the computer and internet, I'm sure my eye sight is getting worse, and I have RSI in my fingers & wrists from typing !!!
Have a great day
