Okay, so my hubby is a history buff. ONE of many subjects he's literally obsessed with is General George Armstrong Custer - I, on the other hand think the man (Custer) was a glory seeker, much to hubby's chagrin. I've read enough and heard enough with lectures and such that the man wanted all Native Americans dead and his name to go down in history as one of the BEST cavalrymen (7th cavalry) around. Well, his name did get in the history books...but for a whole different reason! He and his men were 'slaughtered' 130 years ago today (and June 25th was a Sunday in 1876 also) in an area now known as Crow Agency Montana.
As a family, since our marriage, we've visited Custer's Battlefield (now known as The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument) many-a-times. Hubby has been there MORE times than I can count on my fingers and toes!
Now, I enjoy history. To a point. I cannot find myself getting so wrapped up in it that I would live it, over and over again in my head tho.
The only fact in all I've learned about the man that I can actually relate to, is that he married Elizabeth Bacon on MY BIRTHDAY. Well, not my birthday per sé -- actually, I was born on their anniversary. There, that's better. *smile*
I could almost wager that somewhere, sometime today in the U.S. the movie THEY DIED WITH THEIR BOOTS ON will be televised. *thinking "Oh goodie"*
Right now, as I type, I feel compelled to type "Long live the king"....but I haven't seen Elvis around for quite some time. hehehehehe (in closing, say a little prayer for me---I've a feeling a lot of our conversations will be history lessons today here at home. *sigh*)
Oh, and if there are any other Custer

chi & reverberate58 - to be honest, I would love to admit I'd never heard of Custer before marrying! And as for the sense of humor, one thing comes to mind *singing the popular tune* "Please, Mr. Custer, I don't wanna go!" by Larry Verne --
" SPOKEN: Look at them bushes out there
They're moving and there's a injun behind every one.
Hey, Mr. Custer-you mind if I be excused the rest of the afternoon?
HEY CHARLIE, DUCK YER HEAD!!
Hmm, you're a little bit late on that one, Charlie
Hooh, I bet that smarts!"
LOL! Dennis is a history buff too -- all he seems to watch is the History Channel -- until I bought him 24 that is! LOL! He and Bud should get together -- they'd have a lot in common! (wood work, history... crazy wives ;) LOL!) Thanks for the mini-lesson today!
I was a history major, and I only enjoy it to a point. :) Though, my concentration was civil war history, so anything after 1865 I know nothing about. :)
I think I will pass on the book. I am inclined to agree with you, though.
