Okay all you ladies who were in school during the 50's and 60's....remember the awful, just plain awful gym suits? And you were required to have them 1st day of school each year. And the gym had a small shower area with stalls and the outer shower wall had tiny lockers to hold your shoes, stinky socks and a gym suit!!?!!
Oh they were the epitome of style faux pas. Unflattering, baggy, ugly, and yet, still a forced necessity.
Oh how I hated them. I oftentimes feigned cramps to get out of suiting up. Then there was a time or two I had my 'migranes'....can't forget those. *wink* Yep, I used to concoct short illnesses to keep from putting on those dreadful suits!! Yet, I liked gym itself, I despised the suits with a passion.
Then, each Friday or holiday break we were asked to take them home, launder them (and iron!!) and return on Monday all happy and 'can't wait to put on a style show' troop of tasteless costumes for an hour!! If you don't believe me, or you understand my blog today, check this beauty out:
This one to the right is the exact replica of MINE! Now I ask, look at that smile on her face---"What is wrong with this picture"? Is the girl crazy or what? GEEZ. *grumbling* "Still as ugly now as back then"!!
Here are more of those nasties!!

Oh my gosh what a funny memory. Our's were navy blue shorts and a white shirt. If I remember correctly, the shirts had snaps instead of buttons. I remember having one heck of a time keeping that shirt tucked in. I not only hated the gym suit, I hated gym, and used every excuse not to suit up and participate. That's also when I learned not to worry about modesty ... our showers were gang showers - just a big tile room with shower heads every couple of feet. I remember everyone being so concerned about hiding their naked body as well as they could, that they took twice as long to shower as necessary. They also did the balancing act with their towel while dressing, trying to hide behind the towel while they dressed. I took advantage of that and got in and out of the shower quick, and dropping the towel as soon as I was dry and dressing fast so that I could get to one of the 3 hair dryers first. Especially on the days that we had been in the swimming pool. Heaven forbid that I would have to go to my next class with wet hair! Not in the early 60's when we backcombed our hair as high as possible.
Yes - funny memory. :) I wonder what girls wear now?
OH, yuck!
You know I got lucky.
We moved around enough that I never even had to take gym.
O AWESOME!!!!
Great new layout!!! :o)
Thank You!! :o)
Wystful... you and I must have gone to seperate schools together! I had that same God-AWFUL gym suit! And not only was it UGLY, but if you were a FAT girl, like ME, it was THE most uncomfortable thing to try to move around in! Have the time the crotch was digging up mine, or it was too tight across the chest to even move! Oh GOD how I hated that thing! But I had Barb's showers -- no privacy what-so-ever -- and on top of it, BOTH of our gym teachers were lesbians! Now, today that would not bother me -- but when I was 16 it was definately an issue! Oh, how I hated gym... just hated it!
I meant HALF the time! Sheeeeesh! (see what happens when you get me riled?)
OMG! I haven't thought about gym clothes in decades. We had white shirts and black shorts. I swear they were made of canvas. Nothing like the aroma of sweaty clothes stuffed in a tiny metal locker with sweaty socks and dirty sneakers. I could never remember to take them home to be washed. The socks could get onto the field by themselves. YUCK!
