SUNDAY'S SNIPPET
Sunday's snippets is my original idea to share something a bit 'out of the ordinary'...yet, newsy without being of crimes, wars, hate and such that the media tends to over saturate the papers/tv/internet. I wanted Sunday to be a bit 'peaceful' and enjoyable with meaningless stature or perhaps something of an intersting value!!
A little over a month ago, this little ditty in our local newspaper announced the newest set of turtles that will be auctioned off to raise money and awareness of the species of turtle that is known to return to our coast annually, to nest and reproduce the endangered Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtle.
Each year, in the Spring, the "lady of the Padre Island" returns and lays her eggs! The city of Corpus Christi and the Game and Fish Wildlife Preserve along with the National Seashore Park have studied and protected the female turtles, along with asking anyone to report the whereabouts of the ladies on the sandbars that are off the coast of the Coastal Bend here in Texas! The watching of the hatchlings and the Park Reservists/conservationists release the wee-ones back into the gulf when they are ready! All within the protected area in hopes of saving the dwindling populations of the particular species.
The art, tho the painting that is on this particular piece really caught my eye(*grin* --it's Capt'n Jack Sparrow), is a worth-while cause if you ask me. They are, the artworks themselves, becoming more and more poplular, like the cattle art and horse art - sculptures around the country.
If you're interested more in the hatchlings, the National Reserve on North Padre Island has a video cam, during the time of the active egg laying season. Click here and bookmark for the 2007 Spring nesting!!
And, here is more about the art work in progress. Read it here.

A lil good news is always a welcome sight! *Smile*
(Lisa... And yours?)
Hurray for CC...I think this is just wonderful news! I am always really happy to hear about protecting wildlife creatures & this is such a great way to wake up. *s*
Wystful, this is verrrrry interesting -- but I do wonder about the painting of these turtles. Because, you know, years ago they banned the painting of those little "painted turtles" we used to get, because they found out the paint was hampering the growth of their shells and more than likely causing them discomfort... Now I don't know - maybe paints today are better... or maybe they use a "special" paint... but I'm just saying -- that concerned me a little! I think it's wonderful that they are doing so much to help preserve these guys -- cuz they're really very pretty turtles even without the paint! LOL! (and I hate to see ANY species die out...)
I have put up my "color" meme today ... you might be interested!
Melli, it's art. Not real turtles. They're sculptures
Ohh! You are RIGHT! I DID misunderstand! Well... I'm SO GLAD they are NOT being painted! Boy I feel dumb! LOL! YAY for CC and the turtles! .... silly me...
Good for the turtles.
Love the Jack Sparrow sculpture! Also good that they are protecting the wildlife. So important.
I will link to your holiday decorations once I get mine posted.

That is really great...I love to hear news like that, where it involves protecting the wildlife. I've watched many tv specials about these turtles and it really is amazing to watch!! Those sculpures are just beautiful and love the paintings on them! I've prepared my post for the parade and will be posting it in the morning so I'll come and put in my link then:-) xox
Leave it to you to be the clever one, dear Wystful! Sunday Snippet - AHA!!LOL...Me likeeee!!!
Fascinating article about the turtles. You know I'm a card-carrying member of the Sierra Club and I endorse and support anything that protects the welfare of animals, esp. endangered ones.
