Remember about 3 or 4 decades back in time the 'new' version of artificial fingernails was en vogue? Where you got a package of mixed sizes of acrylic nails that shined like a new penny and either tinted a pale, very artificial flesh tone...or clear? And with the package of mixed sized "nails" you got a small bottle of glue?
The "fingernail" time zone I looked up on Google, shows me that the nail fashion and coloring were stylish for centuries! Some cultures, even men have long, shapely nails!! Now, as I grew up, if a man had extra long fingernails he was considered 'queer'...not in any gay sense as the word sometimes gives reference to, but just odd! So, see men?---it's been part of your history also.
But, what got me started with this blog entry was the color fashions for our fingernails and toenails this Fall is...dark, dark, DARK! And short! Thank goodness I say. Granted, I have had long tapered nails -my nails are hard as--well, "carpenter nails", (mine, not the fake ones) and when they break too close to the fingertip or beyond that's too much pain for me. Childbirth twice some thirty years ago is enough pain for me I tellya!!! I don't need the pain associated of fingernails breaking any more!! The shorter, the better. As long as they're clean!!
These days, at my age, I'd prefer the natural look! I have tons of gray hair of which I'm proud to wear...and I personally like everything of my own. I mean, really, everyone knows these days that we women are quite vain, and we see all the celebrity fashions from movies, television, fashion magazines and all these 'beauties' are most phony! They look a helluva lot like we do---without makeup and anything artifical---a good ol' natural lady. And they, along with us, spend way too much of our hard earned money to enhance our looks. My church's priest once told us girls, when I was a teenager attending catechism, that a bit of color here and there is just perfect on a woman. Not go overboard and look 'cheap'. I still want to live that lifestyle...being close to natural yet with a little color.
But, I digress. I do like color on my nails. Fingers AND toes! Just on my own nails. And I do wear mascara. Yes, being vain here---I like to enhance my eyes. My hubby likes the clear sky-blue eyes, so actually I more or less do it for him. hehehehe
-*-*-
Yet, I've always been leary of the acrylic nails(as a teenager, I did experiment with the artificial ones 'cause I wanted to be like the movie stars). And the salons where ladies and men get their nails worked on for vanity are questionable these days also! There are all kinds of horror stories coming out about the sanitary issues of those establishments. And it's not only the germs from the breathing either --ya know, the masks that some wear over their mouths and noses, and gloves?
I read an ariticle the other day on the 'net about the acyrlic nails and how fungus can begin and GROW as you wear them day after day after day---Yep, you guessed it! Some establishments are now BANNING their employees from wearing them! And for this I say---------hurray!! It's about time. They not only make us look fake, times are now proving my point. The sanitary issues here, are proven!!----the fungus(if you read the article I've shared) is actually killing people around them that continues to grow underneath!
Now wait a minute, I know I'm being a bit on the verge of double standards here. Ya, I use artificial things...like my artificial meds to regulate heart beat. And I put an occasional cigarette in my mouth - at home! But I never smoke around other people unless they too are smokers. I respect those who don't-I'll go outside, or even in the garage. And the artificial drugs I use for my heart are to keep me ALIVE. Among other things I put in my body, it's for me. But now that I read this about the fungus and such things under the acrylic nails, I really don't like 'em!! ---they are harming those around us just like 2nd-hand smoke and vehicle exhaust. Oh, I'm sure we ladies will continue to make use of these enhancements, as I will continue my vices.....afterall, we're only human.
(PS---I won't be around much the following week to visit y'all ---the wallpaper I ordered 3 weeks ago for the 2nd bathroom re-deco is in and I'm gonna start tearing out the old, getting ready for the new all week!!!)
Now, Mrs. Lifecruiser--just where do you hide the wine?!!

I like the fake ones with the natural look..lol.
They are just too expensive to maintain and I am not co-ordinated enough to use the little kits.
Interesting post W1.
Have a great Friday
Hm. Interesting and somehow a bit gross fungi post. I never got into the habit of using them thankfully....
I guess I'm to natural all over, I've even stopped to put on any mascara!
But I do have transparent nail polish on my fingers and red on my toes... That's the only thing left now.
It's very strange with me, because I look better without makeup than with it and it has always been like that actually even if I tried to wear it when I was young.
BTW: You got extra plus points for your comments lately, noted in our admission judgements for the A-Team Cruisers.
That might be just the extra plus that get’s you a place there! We haven’t set the date for next admission yet, but we’ll let you know later.
There is 2 alternatives:
1) I hide the wine because of all my sh*t talking friends that's always drinking all my wine and talking my ears off....
2) All my sh*t talking friends have already drunk all the wine! (most likely)
I'm now filling up the storage. And drawing new plans for a bigger cargo room for this cruise ship, with these cruisers we're gonna need too! *lol*
Wystful1,
What a wise and lovely lady you are! This was such an interesting post you put up. I did not know about your heart (God bless ya), but then again I kinda met you in mid-blog, so to speak. HA HA!! Looks like I will have to make a point of reading your blog from the very beginning and catch myself up.
Boy, your comments about artificial nails and acrylic nails are SPOT ON!!! Like you, I used to wear artificial ones whenever I would break one of my real nails. Being a career girl, I always wanted to have "perfect" hands. Becoz I kinda mixed my real ones with the fakes, I had to keep them constantly polished. I used to wear the brightest or darkest red polishes I could find. Consequently over the years my real nails yellowed to the point I couldn't go without colored polish. They looked just awful!!! It took me about a year to finally get them to the point I could wear clear polish.
I also am not fond of acrylic nails for the very reason you mentioned. I think it's too easy to contract an infection from them. And while they look great, they never give your real nails a chance to grow and "breathe". I'm a natural woman (LOL) and I like my real nails even 'tho somedays I have a few broken ones from too much housework and too many dishes!!
Maybe I need to ask Hubs for a maid, eh?
Cheers,
Carol
