AROUND THE NATION; San Francisco Retires Market Street Streetcars

The last streetcar headed for the carbarn today(20th, but the last run was the 19th of September, 1982), ending 122 years of operation on Market Street.

Tho the movie didn't open nation-wide until November, today is the 78th anniversary of it's debut on screen in NYC. On September 19, 1928 Steamboat Willie premiered on the big silver screen. Starring Mickey Mouse.
According to wikipedia, this wasn't actually the first one Mickey starred in...but it's the one where, afterwhich, he was to become a famous, household name. His two previous movies were Plane Crazy and The Gallopin' Gaucho.

The SF streetcars have made a big comeback though. The tourists love them. The city imported them from all over the world and still have a few of the ones you showed. (They were all the thing when I first moved to the city in 1958).
