Yay me! I can read and speak a bit of Spanish, thanks to my sister-in-law and interest in foreign languages!!!
Today, our city had a special guest. A Tall Ship from Columbia, South America. ARC Gloria (this site has a picture of it with full sail ---arriving here, going through the channel it was unlikely because of the international set speed, traveling to it's destination -- it must be slow, so no sails!)
We heard about it on the local news of her arrival. But no where was it said or written in the newspapers what time of the arrival. Luckily for me........the internet!! I found a home page for the ship, and there was a contact us link. I emailed them and asked for the arrival time of their ship into the port city of Corpus Christi and I was actually lucky enough to have a return email that answered me!! (The lady, Patricia Cardenes or something like that --maybe it was Cartenes, but this is all 'beside the point') The lady told me that it would arrive at Aransas Pass (this is where the ship would come off the gulf and pass into the ships' channel to arrive at the port in our city. I read her reply email and got the meaning of their arrival time around 11:00 a.m. Well, I wanted to be able to see it coming over the horizon and follow it's progress to the tie-up! So, we went early!!
There really wasn't too big a crowd. And before we got there to the beach by the ships' channel, we bought a newspaper. There on the front page, it told the locals that the ship would arrive between 11:30 and noon!!! I guess they didn't want us to know about it and crowd the beach. Dunno really, but I thought it was pretty shabby to not let us know when it was expected until the very morning!
Guests that are visiting our city from out of state got to see something us locals rarely get to see...a sail ship! Here in our port, it's mainly U S Navy --but now that the naval base has been closed, that's rare these days too. It's mostly cargo and oil tankers! Which in itself is a sight to see also. Especially when they go under the bridge!! You see, at the end of the ships' channel is nothing but oil refineries. Understandable I suppose....this IS Texas afterall!!
By mid morning---
The sail ship must pass UNDER the bridge above to tie up at the port gate
But the morning wasn't a waste of time. I got there early enough that I could comb the beach and found a couple of nice shells! And walking along the shore in the gulf is always fine to me!! *smiles*
So...as of about 10:40, the ship (training naval vessel for Columbia, South America) arrived! And beautiful it was!!

Wonderful! Wonderful!!! Oh I love big boats of ANY kind! I truly do! We were luck to watch a tanker pass while sitting on our balcony down in South Padre last summer! It IS a spectacular site! But ohhhhh the tall sailing ships! They are just glorious! And I can even really IMAGINE seeing the air craft carrier! I would just be in complete awe! Again... thank you sO much for sharing it all!
Melli: About the USS Lexington -- it's permanently docked in Corpus...it's world war II...and now a naval museum. You can go on board, peruse the alley ways, etc. Go on top deck where the planes are--even have lunch onboard!! (There's a restaurant)
These are great photos.
We need to make a trip down there, it's been a really long time.
P J....cool...that way we could meet each other!! :o)
