Hubby and I were at the movies again today. One movie we've been waiting for for nearly 2 years! The Da Vinci Code. And what a movie it was. Very good to excellent. Of course, we both read the book by Dan Brown when it hit the bookstands... before it even became a best seller. And yes, all you fans of this work, the movie holds true to the fictional best seller.
From the opening scene to the credits, it follows the book quite well, but there are parts added and some missing--yet still holds the viewer's interest. Director Ron Howard has outdone himself...well, maybe not, 'cause he IS an excellent director, period. Tom Hanks is very believable as Robert Langdon-which I was a bit skeptical at first. But he carried it out through and through.
As I read the book (twice), and after all the bickering and disbelief the book actually caused, I was wondering and questioning "why"? Why would this book, of fiction, bring on such questions. If you're truly of the faith, Christianity, why would you get yourself all worked up from this book? Yet, while I sat through the movie, I realized something. I know now why the devout are so 'up in arms' over this work? Why? Because it's so convincingly done. Yes, it IS possible that this story could work itself out to be somewhat factual. Maybe, maybe not. I know since we've read the book, we have had questions--a lot of questions about the gospels that AREN'T in the bible of today (King James) and it brought up questions of Mary Magdelene. Also, what kind of man Leonardo Da Vinci was (by the way, as in the book and movie, it's stated that the LAST SUPPER is done in fresco, I don't believe that it was/is--Da Vinci was experimenting on a paint as he worked the LAST SUPPER--maybe I'm wrong on this, but with my training in art, I think it isn't fresco). Is it REALLY a woman in the last supper? Things like that. I have my questions answered, yet they ARE MY answers, not yours. So, I refrain from comment. But the book has really opened a whole new meaning of history and learning more. I feel religion isn't something to talk about with peers!! That's not protocol. I feel strongly that it is NOT something you should preach about on the internet. YOUR views are NOT MY views. So, please, don't take my own values and degrade them. I'm not here for that in any way. It's not anything that concerns you, nor are your beliefs my concern. I don't CARE what you believe or want to hear it. It's not your place nor my place to show anyone anything on religion. Religion is all individualistic.
It's just a book, and now a movie. That's all.
If you haven't read the book, I recommend it. If you wish to see the movie, but are leary - I suggest that you see it. If not, well then so be it.
Remember, it IS fiction as stated inside the cover. It IS found in the Literature section of bookstores, not on the religious shelves nor is it with the NON-fiction works. Just trust in your instincts and beliefs. The movie is top notch entertainment, that's all.
(And I'm not in any way showing my self-respecting Christianity; I was raised by a very devout mother, and went to Sunday school, church and catechism and was baptised and confirmed into the church) nor trying to sway you. This isn't posted as anything about belief---it's just a review of my own testimony about the contents and my view of the quality of entertainment of a movie!!)

Congrats!
Yea... I might even have to see this one! I LOVED the book -- and like you, Dennis & I read it when it first came out. I really almost need to read it again before seeing the movie! At least skim through.
LOVE the new look! It's fabulous!
You're definitely right about the media hype on this movie. Maybe this was done to attract more viewers.
It's Saturday and my SPH is up now.
Have a great weekend!
Wow, your review is totally different from the critics. I haven't read the book but plan on it and I'm going to see the movie. If you're interested in getting answers to your questions that the movie and book raised , I recommend going to my seminary's website (www.wts.edu). They have a link to a website that answers the charges in the movies.
BTW, I think I'll link to your movie review so people get a different perspective from the critics. Critics can be so elitist and I think this might prove it.
This movie is definately on our "wanna watch" list ...
we read the book when it came out and enjoyed it thoroughly and thought then that it would translate well to the big screen
as for all the hoopla - you can;t buy that kind of press
